Blog to Lose

No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!

Runners,
I had a baby 6 weeks ago and am trying to get back into running now. I was really into running when I found out I was pregnant (did several 5ks). I am by no means fast but I am the slow and steady turtle that wins the race:) Any advice on how to get back into running without hurting myself lol:)

Make sure you get doctor's permission first! I went back to working out about 6 weeks after baby #2 was born (on May 29 of this year!). I had to do steady walking even then, and I started weights! Slow and steady wins....I"m still working to get back into things myself! If you ran before, try doing what you did the first time to get started and do that again! Good luck!

I'm in a similar situation. Do as Courtney said and get your docs permission first. And don't overdo it, or you will just quit. I have a jogging stroller, though I am a bit apprehensive about putting a 3-week old in it for runs. We go for 2 miles walks four days a week right now, and each time I try to go a little farther or a little faster, or both. Usually its a little faster, since I live in a community with a nice circular loop and there is not much chance at the moment for me to go farther. In a few weeks I'll add a third loop to the circuit to make it three miles, then I will start jogging for about a minute on, two off, until I feel comfortable bumping it up a bit. This is what worked for me the first time I got into running and I know it will work again.

If you are going to exercise with Baby, the number one thing you have to have is patience with yourself, your child, and your progress. Sometimes my girl is fussy and I don't want to take her out, and since I am at home alone right now, I can't just go out for a run by myself. Sometimes she wakes up and needs to go home, cutting the workout short. Sometimes, I am simply too sleep deprived and opt to rest up instead. The other thing to keep in mind is equipment and preparation. Get a good jogging stroller and a heavyweight Bundle Me (by JJ Cole, indispensable!). Have footed outfits and a sweater set with a warm hat for your baby, if you live in a cold climate. In in Northwesern New Jersey where it is currently windy and cold most days, so bundling her up is the most important, yet time consuming, part of my preparation to go for a workout.

Good luck!

I love the Couch to 5K Program - it might be a nice way to ramp back up and ease into to help prevent injuries.
www.coolrunning.com
and you can get free podcasts for each week that have music/interval directions from a guy named Robert Ullrey - go to Itunes and search:Podcasts for Running
The Couch to 5K pocasts will come up and you will have one for each week - 9 in total. Remember you can extend the weeks instead of advancing on each week and based on how you feel - I would just listen to your body and take it easy...

I loved this program and started it weighing 195 or so...its doable.
