Blog to Lose

No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!

I just started WW this week on my own. I need ideas for foods that make you feel fuller! Low-fat oatmeal is one I've found that works. When I'm hungry I prefer to snack rather than make a meal, so I need to curb these darn hunger pains. Please, HELP ME! TIA :)

1. Nonfat plain yogurt!!! Eat it with breakfast, or as a snack or for dessert. My breakfasts only started holding me through the morning when I substituted my glass of milk for a cup of yogurt. The flavored kinds aren't nearly as filling...too much sugar. I add strawberries and a drizzle of honey to mine if I want it sweet.

2. Veggies of all sorts. They aren't filling on their own, but they really help to bulk up a meal, esp. if you are adjusting to smaller portions of meat and starch.

3. Light rye crackers--full of convenient, portable whole grain goodness. I spread mine with a light laughing cow cheese for added protein. Hummus and natural peanut butter make good spreads, too.

4. Beans. A good bowl of bean soup is a fabulous lunch or dinner and is very sustaining.

5. Water. It may not be a food, but being dehydrated always gives me the munchies. Make sure you're drinking enough.

In general, foods with lots of soluble fiber (like your oatmeal) are good bets...they are lower on the glycemic index and are absorbed by your body more gradually. Foods high in lean protein are also good. Good luck!

Thank you so much! I will have to try all of these. I'm so used to eating when I 'feel' like it, and being a busy new mom I tend to go for what's the fastest. Which is usually cookies, chocolate, and pop-tarts. Such an adjustment :) Thanks again!

Hi, I just restarted WW this week too. I cooked up some baby carrots and have been munching like crazy on them. I have false teeth but cannot wear them so i have to do it this way, maybe you could try the raw ones? I also have been filling up with veggies as much as i can cause i know about those dang hunger pains!

I have been eating raw carrots, green beans, and corn quite a bit this week. Occasionally I eat salad but other than that, I dislike veggies. All my life I've only ever cared for those sparse few.
Ahhh why does the bad stuff have to taste so good? LOL Good luck to you, and thank you for the suggestions :)

grapes- You get a whole cup for 1 point.
low fat popcorn- It's normally about a point for several servings.
soups- I have a great vegetable soup that I really rely on to get full.
chili- If you make it with lean ground turkey meat, it's really low point and filling.
mushrooms- cook some fresh ones in a pan with worsetshoire (sp.?) sauce ( I dislike vegetables too, but to me, I don't think of mushrooms as vegetables since they're not green.)
spinach leaves- I normally make a huge salad out of this. I got the idea from Applebees. On their WeightWatchers menu, they have a grilled chicken salad for 5 points. Whenever I ate this I would get full and stay full and normally not even eat all my points for the day, so I came up with an at home version.
You can probably already see that I'm a fan of lean ground turkey meat. I love it because a serving is huge and it's heathy, tasty, and filling.

Whenever I have a meal or a snack, I always try to make sure it has two things: fiber and protein. I keep some lowfat turkey pepperoni in the fridge for a quick protein fix. I eat them like chips. You can have 17 for one point so I just grab a handful throughout the day and make sure I don't eat any more than 17. If I'm hungry, I'll think back to what I've had and normally realize I'm lacking in either fiber or protein. Then I have a snack that has what I'm missing.

Great suggestions! I've read low-fat popcorn is low points but I guess I have this notion that popcorn = smothered in butter & salt, which in turn = fattening. I need to get some that's LF, DH and I eat popcorn frequently.
I also have a good vegetable soup, made with Cheese Whiz. I'll have to see what the points would be if I used low-fat cheese whiz.
I'll also watch for ground turkey to come on sale - I'll give it a try. I love the turkey pepperoni! I almost like it better than the norm because it doesn't feel so greasy.
Thanks for your suggestions, I appreciate them!

Your soup sounds interesting! I love my popcorn. I use Parkay spray butter. Without it, I don't really care for the low fat popcorn. I also found this popcorn seasoning to sprinkle on top. It was really good but hard to find at the store. One time I sprinkled onion powder on mine, and that was pretty good. I've heard of people sprinkling fat free parmesan cheese on theirs, and I be that would be tasty.

Here's my original recipe, I'm sure it could be doctored to lower the points
Cheese Vegetable Soup
4 Cups potatoes
15 oz jar Cheese Whiz
2 - 20 oz packages frozen peas & carrots
12 cubes chicken bouillon dissolved in 8 cups water
2 cubes margarine, melted
1 Cup flour

-Peel, cube, and boil potatoes
-add bouillon to potatoes
-boil vegetables until soft
-slowly add flour to butter, stirring constantly
-mix vegetables and potatoes
-add Cheese Whiz to butter mixture, stir until melted
-remove from heat
-mix cheese with potatoes
-add onion salt to taste
*may also add fresh onions if desired

DH and I love this recipe. I'll make a full pot just for the 2 of us and eat on it for a few days. It keeps well in the fridge for awhile, but we always eat it pretty fast.

I have the ICBINB spray that I'll have to try on popcorn, I never thought of that! I'll also have to try the Parmesan cheese. Thanks for the ideas!

Thanks for the recipe. It sounds delicious. I'll put mine below.

3 cans tomato juice

2 cans stewed tomatoes (not drained) I've learned that Hunts brand has a traditional flavor while the off brand of tomatoes at our store give it a sweet taste.

2 cans drained vegall

1 can drained corn (You can add another if you have some extra points.)

fresh onion or onion flakes as you like

ground beef/ground turkey- (We normally use half and half of each. It ended up being 6 points for the meat, and the only other ingredient you have to count is the corn. This recipe ended up making two huge servings at 8 points a piece. Most of my weight problem is I love the feeling of being full. This soup definitely accomplishes this but in a healthy low point way.)

Brown the meat in a soup pot. Cook with onions if you like. Drain the meat, and return the meat to the pot. The idea is to leave a tiny bit of grease from the meat in the pot to add flavoring to the soup. Add other ingredients. Simmer until all ingredients are warm. Do not let the soup come to a full boil. My mom says it changes the taste. Add garlic salt and other seasoning to taste.

8 points for two servings (Add more or less points according to how much meat and corn you use.)

Dumb question...what is vegall?

You can find it on the vegetable aisle. Basically, it's just mixed vegetables that are canned. You can also use frozen vegetables. And it's not a dumb question!
