Blog to Lose

No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!

to begin, i'm not asking about exercise in an "activity point" stance...but i was wondering what everyone does at the gym?

i have a bad knee (i had knee surgery when i was in 8th grade and it's never been the same...boohiss) so when i go to the gym, i usually do anywhere between 30-55 minutes of cardio, which usually includes up to three different elliptical machines. i try to switch it up on different machines so it keeps my body guessing and saves me from boredom/dreading being on one machine for too long. i also try to alternate between doing 30 minutes on one day and then doing 50 minutes the next day.
i then use the weight machines and try to alternate days from arms to legs.
also, i take an african dance class one night a week. aside from all this, i take my dog for walks and sometimes go on bike rides.
sadly, my gym doesn't offer any classes like aerobics or zumba...and i wish they did.

i'm wondering if what i'm doing is right (for maximum results) and wanted to get some perspective on what everyone else does! :)

I love my Zumba class ... too bad your gym doesn't offer one.

I too have a bum knee (dance accident during rehearsals for the community theater's production of "Hair" while I was back in Indiana, and it still occasionally goes out for no particular reason — one day, it went out while I was bowling ... another while I was baking cookies).

I try to walk several times a week. I take a Saturday morning Zumba class and try to hit a Boot Camp Express class on Tuesdays and Thursdays (missed both days last week and this Tuesday, though). After that class, I ride the exercise bike for 15 to 20 minutes.

Rarely I'll use the elliptical trainer at the gym (I hate that thing!). More often, I use the treadmill. I should do more work with weights, but I've been slacking on that one lately.

getting the most of a workout is a puzzler indeed:) I think what you are doing is AWESOME but then again, i am not a personal trainer.

does your gym offer personal training? If so, maybe you could look at a one time booking and make it clear you want something designed for your body, your goals and with your injuries in mind?

hope this helps!

Ditto me on the bad knee (kneeS in my case). I love the elliptical and have one at home. I also like to do several different DVDs. I alternate between the Biggest Loser series, Walk Away the Pounds, and Plus Size Pilates. Be careful with the Biggest Loser DVD's - there's a lot of squats and lunges. I'm very heavy, so doing squats and lunges continuously kills my knees, but it's usually okay every so often.

Hope this helps!

I'm no expert but it sounds like you are definately on the right track, but if you are looking for some more, there are all kinds of exercise plans online. Things like learning to run 5km - to making a strength training/toning program for yourself.
