About Me:
I'm the author of Why Your Last Diet Failed You and How This Book Won't Help You on Your Next One. It's the inspiring true story of one man as he loses seventeen thousand pounds in just one hundred and ninety-two months. Unfortunately, he gained it all back last Thanksgiving.

Yes, this book is my tale: the good, the bad, and the deep fat fried. The main story spans years of dieting ups and downs. From Slim-Fast plans to cheeseburger benders, I follow up every smashing success with an agonizing failure. Admittedly, this would be a truly painful read if the subject weren't tackled head on with sufficient doses of satire and humor. Along the journey are many topical tangents: I give irreverent reviews of popular diets, teach the reader how to start his or her own diet craze, clarify why Pop-Tarts are not "an excellent source of vitamins and minerals", tell the frightening tale of the Pancakes of Death, and explain how diet sodas bring all the broken pieces of my life together.

You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll put it in your next garage sale.

Carol of the Bells

Not food-related, but I thought I'd share some holiday music on my main blog today. If you don't mind reading through half a thousand words of psychobabble to get there. :)

Bracing Myself

Tonight's the kickoff. Tonight begins the sixty-five day or so holiday marathon. I've noticed that Halloween (for me) seems to completely set the tone for how the entire holiday will progress. Twice in my life I've (more or less) held it together through the holidays. And both times were the only two times I didn't eat fistfuls of candy tonight.

So here goes...

I think I finally figured it out

Tell me if this pattern sounds familiar.

  • You wake up ready to make today a great day.

  • You have your oatmeal or bacon for breakfast (depending if you're on Plan A or Plan B)

  • You have a healthy snack mid-morning

  • You turn down pizza for lunch and have oatmeal or bacon (again).

  • You get home at six o'clock and have four ounces of chicken and steamed vegetables for dinner

  • You then spend 7pm until 11pm with your hand permanen

Bad News Everyone

They turned on the LHC this morning and the earth didn't get sucked into a black hole. Yes, that's right. I'm afraid we're all going to have to keep dieting.

I read you post about losing 1100 pounds congrats...all joking aside that is really intersting.
For me it's all about habits. I have to retrain my brian. You only make enough for one plate of food, and THEN this is the hardest part Leave 3 bites of food on you plate put soap on it detergent what ever (so you don't eat it again) and flush it down the toliet or sink.
Then have your snack, and go to bed. You might still be hungry, but push through. If you keep doing this everyday you will form a new habit. Our mind and body is amazingly able to adapt to new conditions. Don't believe the lie that it's impossible to change. You can do it! I did!

Hey Charlie :) I just thought I would leave a comment to let you know that I creeped your page and had a pleasurable experience reading your posts, which I must say, are very well written (no wonder you're an author!). Hope you enjoyed Halloween and all its splendors!

Thanks for making me think. You pose a challenging statement with "My epiphany is that the slip-ups (or what I like to call "real life") are more out of our control than we're comfortably able to admit." You're right. However, I do disagree when you say there's no big picture, but that's more based on my personal beliefs from many areas of my life: family, religion, finances, and weight, I believe all have a big picture. Or, maybe, rather a long-term picture. To me, big and long-term are synonymous. But that's probably such a minor thing that we're arguing, because you seem to be on with all your other thoughts/epiphanies.

Thanks for the comment. I don't know if you got to read my earlier blog post, but I have just recently, in the last couple of months, made that conversion in my belief that diets don't work and it's about a lifestyle change. Before, eating junk food was a bigger pay-off than being fat. Now, the pay-off is becoming healthy and thin. In the big picture, that's a bigger pay-off to me than the junk food and overeating was. But, in the smaller picture, there are some days where I lose focus and slip up. That's what my post was about that you commented on.

A lot of people tried answering this question on Roni's site about a week back. I got into the fray myself, but never did fully formulate my theory. I'm still working on it, though. :) http://ronisweigh.com/2009/02/why-do-you-think-people-have-a-ha
