Blog to Lose

No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!

Guys I am going to do it if it kills me... But there is definately something wrong. It is the second time I have done week one. And after I run for a minute I get a really severe stitch-like pain in my side. It really hurts and I don't understand why I keep getting it. I also used to get something similar before I gained weight when I would walk on the treadmill at the gym.Should I be worried? I keep on running even though it hurts like hell...

Second question. The couch to 5 k podcast says you should feel like your exercise is working but you should not be out of breath. Well let me tell you sisters, I feel like I am going to faint I am panting so hard. And it is only the first week! Does anyone else feel this way or is something wrong with me?

Day One of the 25 day challenge is going well :)

Please get back to me as I am worried and I dont want to give up the Couch to 5k. I want to be able to run like the wind!!

I felt the SAME exact way when I started jogging, I kept asking my sister "Are you sure I'm supposed to be getting these side pains?" and "Why am I breathing so hard??" Her response: "It's because you're out of shape!" As everyone's said, you just have to build up to it. Even missing 2 or 3 days of running I notice a major difference in my endurance. Slow and steady, we'll get there!

Hi guys,
thanks so much for your comments. I am not running fast but I will try running even slower. Gosh I am ashamed I am so unfit- I am only 20! I will go really slow next time and take it as easy as I can even if it means I am half-jogging half walking if you know what I mean..

Also, count your steps and breathe in rhythm. Breathe step 2, 3, 4 exhale 2, 3, 4, breathe step 2, 3, 4 etc. It's pacing yourself and your breathing. It should help.

I agree. Go a little more slowly so you can talk comfortably then you won't get the side stiches. The speed will come later--right now you're working on the endurance part. Good luck!

I'm no expert on this but from what I've read and heard the you could be getting the stich from breathing too hard, causing your diaphram to spasm. You're basically taking in too much air. Again I don't know if there is any truth to this but it sounds like you're working out a little bit too hard. You should be able to hold a conversation while you are running. If you can't then you're running too hard for your current ability. Obviously as you get in better shape you'll be able to run faster and with more exertion and still be able to do this. It's called the talk test. Every running clinic I've taken uses this rule. Hope this is helpful. Don't give up just take it really slow. I progressed from barely being able to do 3km to running a half marathon in a period of six months and the only thing I did different this time was to build up very slowly in terms of mileage and exertion. You can do it!
