28 lb weight gain, 10” waist size increase and up two dress sizes in 6 weeks!
No – not me (thank goodness)! Last night I watched a TV programme about a well know British TV show host who agreed to take part in a 6-week long experiment to see what happens if don’t take care of yourself.
At the start of the trial Claire Sweeney is in great physical shape. A medical examination confirms her fitness: she has a 27" waist, weighs 9st 13lbs, her body fat is 22 per cent. The doctor says her blood pressure and pulse rate are those of a very fit person.
Whilst Claire is loosening the reigns, she's not doing a "super size me"; she won't binge on food she doesn't enjoy. Rather she'll abandon any thoughts that would normally restrict her intake. At the supermarket Claire shops for her favourite foods including cheese, white chocolate, custard slices, crisps and full cream milk.
By the end of the 6-week period Clare had: gained 28lb worth of butt and pot belly; put 10” on her slim waist line; gone up two dress sizes; raised her blood pressure high enough to need medication; pushed her BMI from 21 to 31% (obese) and increased her body fat from 22 to a staggering 32%.
At the end of the programme we were told Clare had returned to her normal healthy life style but was struggling to shift the last 8 lbs to regain her normal svelte figure.
This TV programme really taught me that the changes I make to improve my diet have to permanent and sustainable. It appears steady, slow weight loss with small steps to increase levels of activity really are the answer.
Other news
It was -6 degrees centigrade in the south of England last night and the Serpentine in Hyde Park has frozen over. We are expecting snow. Last night my gas boiler broke down so I now have no hot water or heating in my home. I hope I can find an engineer to fix it for me today.
I went to an aqua aerobics class last night; it was brilliant fun, 1980’s disco music and learning how to do stomach crunches whilst lying on a float; I haven’t laughed so much in ages. I’m going to my first T’ai Chi class on Thursday evening.
The eating is still going to plan. I even managed to cope with a proper breakfast this morning despite running late because of boiler problems.
