Over the course of the last several days, I have learned two lessons:
1. Muscle is harder to gain than to lose
2. Carbohydrates are the bain of all evil (This we already knew)
Allow me to explain. While weighing and bodyfat measurements are done on a weekly basis, my progress is judged in the interim strictly by the mirror. Because I carb loaded this weekend, it appeared I had several weeks to go before I could truly see my abs. That is until half of Monday was spent in the bathroom.
I was amazed at how much water I dropped after dipping below 100 carbs (I do low carb days three days per week) and by the end of the day I had become noticeably more vascular and defined-- almost like dusting off furniture. On the flip side, I now walk a fine line between becoming too thin and losing the valuable muscle I have spent the last six months building and ensuring I still maintain/lose as necessary.
As I see it now, I am within 2-3lbs of my goal weight. But do I back off the cardio? Do I up my diet to compensate? I spent yesterday agonizing over my decision (partly due to a lack of sleep) and came to the conclusion that I need to recalculate my calories for slower weightloss (1/2 pound versus 1lbs per week) But what do I add to my diet? Carbs, protein, maybe throw in a bit of fat?
Given that carbs lead to water retention, my addition will likely come in the form of an extra can of tuna or chicken per day. The other issue is sodium from cans and spices. While I will have no problem dropping most of this, I am loathed to part with my beloved
Salad Supreme Seasoning.
This stuff makes steamed broccoli taste like steamed hamburger (mmm steamed), but seriously it works on grits, oatmeal or anything else which needs a bit of a kick. I’m not sure of the calories, but this stuff rocks and right now I am averaging over a shaker per day(which I need to drop)
In any case, I got some sleep last night so hopefully I will make responsible decisions today-- depending on how I feel after cardio. Diet log posted below.
