Blog to Lose

No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!

Lesson of the week:

So, one week to go until my NYC trip and things have once again been up and down. But one thing that is underscored for me each morning is that waking up at 5 am and a low carb diet do not mix well.

Monday and Tuesday seem normal enough, but by the middle of the week, the lack of carbs and sleep begin to take their toll. A particularly troubling symptom of carbohydrate deprivation (at least in my case) has been my inability to concentrate on one task at a time.
I will create elaborately detailed to do lists and agonize over the painstaking details of what must be done. But by the time I process this information, the time I’e set aside has nearly elapsed.

In speaking with fellow dieters, it seems we lose sight of large goals in the small detail of what we want to accomplish. I have therefore limited myself to a four item to do list of the day’s most important items. Today’s list includes:

1. Do something I enjoy (write)

3. Finish weekly exercise column
3. Pay bills
4. Meet my daily exercise/strength goals

Notice I have put the most imminent goal squarely at the top of the list. This process has taught me that one of the major reasons we lose sight of our goals is prolonged dieting becomes a series of meaningless choirs.

By contrast, the key to preserving the sense of well being and accomplishment is to create small reasons to celebrate each day. Whether this means jotting down your feelings, taking time to spend with friends or even a small cheat meal, the sense of accomplishment and excitement you felt on day one of your diet is renewed in some fashion each day.

Progress update:

On a more positive note, I have a photoshoot for Men’s Exercise Magazine and I am meeting with the model editor of Men’s Health about modeling. I actually met with him a few years ago and it will be interesting to get his take on how my body has developed since then.

As for my body, things are shaping up nicely. I can now see my fully developed six pack, I have maintained my strength (despite losing weight) and I am still able to feast once per week.

The challenge I now face is not going overboard on my cardio/dieting. This tends to happen toward the middle of the week when indecisiveness and fatigue cloud my dietary judgment. I have lost exactly four pounds and come hell or high water (or buffets full of goodness) I will maintain this weight for the next three weeks.

I should be better about updating my log(s) during the next week as many of my clients have gone away for the holiday.

Hi Chris, I've done the low carb thing in the past and I always noticed that I would have difficulty concentrating and/or headaches if I didn't drink a lot of water especially in the morning when the ketones are at their highest level. That rocks that your doing the photoshoot. I have a family member who has modeled and been a spokesperson for Gold's, and has done some commercials. It took him years of spending quite a bit of time in the gym to get that cut. I commend you on the work that you have done and wish you well with the low carb lifestyle.
