So much for the cheap fish

The hardest part for me in trying to lose weight is the amount of money it takes to buy food for the family that we normally wouldn't buy before. Wheat bread costs more, buying fresh produce isn't cheap (compared to the packaged snacks we used to covet), add on different types of 25% of our food (the kids get the puke-look on their face everytime they look at my cereal) and so on. The main items we all agree on in our household are the meats. The kids love fish, chicken, shrimp and don't even notice the difference since we started buying 93% lean beef and ground turkey.

That being said, I was so unhappy this morning to read that tilapia is not so good for you. We weekly buy the frozen packaged farm-raised tilapia because it's affordable and is easy to come up with meal ideas for - this weekend I baked it with an onions, mushroom and olive oil sauce...it was divine. I can't count how many times I've heard that a good amount of fish is necessary in your weekly diet. Frozen or fresh rarely matters (since most "fresh" fish has been previously frozen anyways) but other fish are so much more expensive than most other meats. At least for a family of 5. We may have to start doing for fish what we do when we decide to splurge on a rarely-bought steak: serve the kids hot dogs.

I'm only buying for two, but I completely agree with you--it's sooo expensive to buy healthy, good-for-you food. It can be frustrating, because often I want to buy the better options, but I can't. As for the tilapia, I read that article too, and it's just so hard for me to believe research that is based on a single study. I bet, just like whether or not caffeine or wine are good for you, there will be a lot of new research on this, and I bet they all contradict each other!

I don't know. It is a little more expensive for healthier, fresher food but I'm more inclined to actually prepare the fresh foods I've purchased than I am frozen or canned items. Usually the frozen or canned items just make me subconsiously think about the fact that they will store for long periods of time I suppose. This is typically what they do when I buy them, sit and sit, and sit. Having fresh makes me feel good mentally and excited to cook it because I know I'm putting something good in my body. With literally hundreds or thousands of ways to prepare any food item you are bound to find atleast a handful of dishes that your children will find delicious or atleast tolerable enough to eat without complaint for a variety of fruits, veggies & meats or fish.

I am also feeding a family of 5. Some many times I have fixed salmon for me and the hubby and hot dogs or something else for the kids. It is funny how we can prepare this wonderful expensive meal and they pull faces and say whats that. We fix them mac and cheese and they worry about is who got the most.

As for healthy food being more expensive, I agreed it is. But we have cut way way back on junk and fast food and soda so I think it sort of balances each other out.
