About Me:
Hello! My name is Suzy, and I have a fantastic husband (Dave) and four cats (Merlin, Zoe, Moses, and Pedro). I'm only 30 but I finished my PhD 2 years ago now. I'm an Assistant Professor of English at a small-ish state school in Indiana. I really like what I do for a living (they pay me to do this?!) and I really like my life. I LOVE my husband. He's my best friend and an amazing human :)

My health and weight loss journey began at birth. Seriously, I was 9 pounds and a buncha ounces! I had rolls on my thighs even then. In grade school I was the "smart fat girl" who was chosen last for sports but first for group projects. I have simply ALWAYS been fat.

Oddly enough, I have a pretty healthy self-image. I sincerely like myself. I love who I am and I'm proud of my accomplishments. I even think I'm pretty! I don't look in the mirror and hate what I see. But I want to lose weight and be healthy.

I did the Optifast program through the local hospital right after I finished the PhD in 2006. I had gained 30 pounds while writing the dissertation at Panera Bread Co. with a bagel in one hand and the other hand typing! In Optifast, I lived on suppliments for 18 weeks, under doctor supervision. I lost around 43 pounds and learned that eating is a choice, that smells can be enjoyed without eating anything, that hunger and cravings are two different things, and that it really IS possible to lose weight. Since then, I've lost about 10 more, but it's SLOW.

Currently Dave and I are training to walk a half marathon in September. We walk 3 miles 2-3 times a week, do other exercise on the "off" days, and walk one "long walk" once a week. The long walk keeps getting longer. We're up to 8 miles now! I'll be using this blog to count down to Sept. 27th.

The Wagon

I'm back on it. After a virtually "perfect" 10 months of logging food and exercise, I, Suzy, fell off the proverbial wagon. It was my birthday, and I was just plain tired of it all. For 10 days I just stopped everything. I haven't weighed in to know the damage, but I'm back together as of today. Wa Hoo. I know I'm not perfect, and these things happen, but I'm still sad at wasting time moving backward when it has been such a struggle to move forward. ~sigh~ I'm doing South Beach Phase I for a wee… Continue

Why do people think I want to hear their advice on weight loss?

I mean, seriously. People who know I'm working to lose weight are just so willing to share how they (or their brother/mother/uncle/boyfriend) lost 10 pounds in only 3 weeks by ~fill in your choice off gimmicky Hollywood diet~. Today's was "Body for Life" which isn't as gimmicky as some, certainly, but still has its fair share of protein-powder supplements and grandiose claims of success. I checked it out. It has some interesting ideas I'll save in my back pocket for after my body is tired of the… Continue

Resistance Bands

They're stretchy! They're portable! They're... resistance-y? As per my last post, I've upped my calories and my strength training. I did arms at the gym on Saturday. Legs yesterday, also at the gym. Today, I tried doing arms at home. I rolled out my stability ball (abs today also), dragged out the 3# and 5# free weights I've got, and then I remembered that I also have one of the WATP stretchy bands. What a great tool! I did most of the workout with the band and it was great! I could really tell… Continue

Update after discussion with health specialist

Ok, some of you know that I posted about a week ago that I WILL NEVER GO BACK to the way I was before, no matter how long it takes me to take off the second 50 pounds. I mentioned that I was meeting with the health professional in charge of health education etc. at the university's rec center. After an hour conversation, I feel like a new woman. In short, I'm EXCITED by the plan we came up with. Oddly enough, she wants me to UP my calories to 1500 a day and I'm to eat within a range up to 1700 d… Continue

Just wanted to say "hi!" and hope the new academic year is treating you well. This has been a busy and slightly crazy time for my of my friends who are teaching (and/or studying) -- hoping things settle down soon!

Mine IS actually Susan... but I've always hated it... there were always several Susans in my classes and work environments. It so lacks originality...
My SO is the one who respelled it for me, and I quite like it...
He usually also calls me Zee or Zeen which is fairly cute.

Middle schoolers are sometimes truly annoying, but I really love them. Oddly enough, I believe that I'm lucky to have this job. I'm sure you'll have to remind me that I said this when school starts!

Oh my gosh! I grew up right near Columbia City. We went to Fort Wayne all the time! (Gotta love Glenbrook mall!) I've even been in the IPFW library.

Small world, eh?

Hi Suzy,
Thanks for taking the time to comment on my blog. I think that in my head, I knew about those other 'options' for dealing with sadness... working out, going for a walk, treating myself to something new. I just needed to hear them. Today when I want to turn to something to munch on, I'll think twice and find a healthier alternative.
Thanks for your kind words. Hope you have a great day.

Hi Suzy! Yes it is the TOPS pledge thingy...The second one is what we say before the end of the meeting. I like to have them there to remind me of what I am trying to do. It seems that once a week just isn't enough for me to keep inspired....:)

I just finished my first year of coursework actually :) I'm in Late Ancient History at a certain Southern uni, frequently associated with its basketball team ;) Math ... oi. That's for those far smarter than I am. I'm firmly planted in the humanities. Best wishes to your husband, though, and kudos to you on completing your degree!

Ugh! I'm steeling myself for that phase. Doing my M.A. full-time while working full-time was definitely an occasion (... a LONG occasion ...) for neglecting my body entirely. Thankfully I'm funded for my Ph.D., although the cross-country move, etc., have taken their own kind of toll. On the bright side, I'll be finishing up coursework in somewhat better shape than I began it :) Hope life and academia are treating you well!
